 Now with an improved pump, the Butterfly pressure lantern is an extremely bright lantern that can light up a very large room. It is as bright as 3-4 100-watt light bulbs. They attain their brightness because they vaporize the kerosene (instead of burning liquid kerosene) and deliver the pressurized kerosene vapor to the mantle. Kerosene has more energy, drop for drop, than propane, and that additional energy translates to more light.
In order to vaporize the kerosene, the lantern must be preheated. The model 828 can be preheated two ways. It has a small cup inside that you can fill with denatured alcohol (a teaspoon or so), then light with a match. The burning alcohol heats the fuel delivery tube. When the alcohol is almost completely finished burning, you open the fuel knob and kerosene travels up the fuel delivery tube. The heated tube vaporizes the kerosene liquid and the vapor is delivered to the mantle. The remaining flame from the burning alcohol ignites the vapor and the lantern starts.
 Rapid Start - The second method is the "rapid start" feature. Rather than using denatured alcohol to preheat the lantern, the lantern has a thumb switch that releases a pressurized, atomized mist of kerosene inside the globe that you light with a match. The ignited kerosene mist (which is on the inside of the glass globe) looks and sounds like a propane torch. In 20-30 seconds, it heats up the inside of the lantern and then you turn on the fuel and the lantern starts.
Each lantern now comes with an improved pump that is more reliable and requires fewer pumps to pressurize the lantern. The previous design used a piece of leather that worked well once it was broken in, but could sometimes take a long time to loosen up and work properly. The new design uses a solid plastic barrel with two rubber o-rings.
If you're looking for an everyday lantern and you don't need a lot of light or don't have the time to understand the principles of operation, then buy a Coleman. If you want the brightest lantern available and want to wow your friends, get the Butterfly.
